Inscribed photo of the "King of Western swing", shown wearing Western clothing
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Victor,/We hope to come to/your Town Someday/Best Wishes./Bob Wills/Hollywood,/Cal.". Sepia, 8x10. Songwriter and bandleader Bob Wills (1905-1975) grew up in a musical family, and developed a fondness for the blues from his black West Texas playmates. In 1934, Wills moved from Texas to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and developed a large regional radio following for his group, The Texas Playboys. The versatile band combined country, jazz, blues and pop influences, and was known for its signature song, "The New San Antonio Rose." Wills' "Faded Love" was another favorite. The Texas Playboys made their film debut with Tex Ritter in Take Me Back to Oklahoma (1940), and appeared in several films thereafter. After service in World War II, Wills moved to the California, where his initial following was among fellow Okies and Texans who had moved to California during the Dust Bowl, Depression and war. But his appeal was broader than that, and by 1945 Wills was outdrawing Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman on the West Coast. As musical tastes changed in the 1950s, Wills became less popular. Radio stations became more specialized, and his style didn't fit neatly into either the country or pop categories. "The King of Western Swing" could still thrill a dance hall crowd, though. He entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1968. Lightly worn at corners. Toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
